Color TV’s self-titled debut album mixes ambient music and idm layers to downtempo, Detroit techno, dub, old school electro and even rap/dubstep - in a track that features the British grime artist Infecta -, while keeping it whole through looped glitches, AM radio samples and TV static.
The album is a semi-live homemade recording by André Z.P., a Brazilian musician who’s been toying with electronic music since the year 2000. Back then, he used to blend loose music fragments together with distorted samples and guitar feedback in a Pentium I personal computer. Over time, things have gotten better, and culminated on this release, which features 15 tracks and 5 computer wallpapers as packaging, designed by Rafael Nascimento.
André Z.P. is also the man behind the folk/electronica project Black Barn Music and the chiptune project Pulselooper.

When the new album by Andrei Machado, Étant, starts playing, the sentiment you get is anxiety. Different from his previous work Lacuna, these first moments are notably crafted, causing a palpable sensation that only a sensitive artist could achieve. One can notice, with caress, that Andrei is back, inviting us to walk the new path he found through his music. The melodies from this singular world are contemplative, explored by Andrei’s uncommon minimalism, passing messages that beautiful words could not translate. And here lies the reflection caused by Étant, and its french translation - Existence - could not be more appropriate: is his own terms, Andrei Machado gives voice to the human anguish of Being. Be it experimenting, as in “Ecce Homo” and “O Limiar da Eternidade”, or causing a recurring déjà-vu in “O Cemitério dos Deuses Mortos”, or even firming a touching accent as in “E, Finalmente, Deixei o Sol Entrar”, Andrei Machado proves that he has not lost his strength, that his music outbreaks and turns itself in light, and yet can melt into emotive tears. In his new work Andrei Machado justifies himself and vigorously demontrates that music, the beautiful music in its most classic tone, is still here: it exists.

Quando o novo disco de Andrei Machado, Étant, começa a soar, o sentimento é de ansiedade. Diferentes de seu ascendente trabalho anterior, Lacuna, estes primeiros momentos são preocupadamente esmerados, causando uma sensação palpável que somente um artista muito sensível poderia captar. Percebe-se, com apreço, que Andrei está de volta, nos convidando a trilhar o novo caminho que encontrou através de sua música. As melodias deste mundo singular são contemplativas e seguem inefáveis, exploradas pelo minimalismo incomum de Andrei, passando mensagens que as palavras bonitas não poderiam traduzir. E daqui parte a reflexão causada por Étant, e sua tradução do francês - Existência - não poderia ser mais oportuna: à sua forma, Andrei Machado dá voz à angústia humana de Ser. Seja experimentando, com “Ecce Homo” e “O Limiar da Eternidade”, ou causando um recorrente déjà-vu em “O Cemitério dos Deuses Mortos”, ou ainda firmando-se comovente com “E, Finalmente, Deixei o Sol Entrar”, Andrei consegue provar que não perdeu a força, que sua música ainda eclode e se refaz em luz, e ainda pode se desmanchar em emocionadas lágrimas. Sim, em sua nova obra Andrei Machado se justifica nisso, mas também demonstra vigorosamente que a música, a bela música em seu mais clássico tom, ainda está aqui: ainda existe.

Imagine, if you will, a Greek farmer living in the mountains of Minas Gerais, Brazil, no internet connection, connected to the nearest road by a 7 kilometre dirt track and who has to get up at the crack of dawn to tend his animals. This is Rothis Bournias, not your average ambient house producer.
These tracks were recorded at the end of 2008, hence the title, and are a fine representation of what this prolific musician is producing at the moment.
Perhaps due to the archaic Yamaha keyboard he uses or maybe due to his own personal taste but these tracks are a distinct reminder of the releases from the Fax and Apollo labels in the early nineties, labels at the forefront of ambient house and what was being defined as Intelligent Dance Music (IDM), a sound long due for a revival.
But don’t let these outdated definitions put you off, Rothis adds something new to the genre and his idyllic farming lifestyle shines through in these tracks where you will find chattering, engaging drum patterns, candescent textures combined with winsome and memorable melodies. Download, sit back, drink your tea or whatever it is you do to relax… and enjoy.
Andrei Machado is a Brazilian composer and Lacuna is his debut album. With simple touches of his piano he creates some beautiful, soft and heartbreaking melodies. A mix of elegance, beauty and sensitivity in an airy and enchanting atmosphere. It may not be a new formula, but Andrei manage to breathe some life into it.
