QUEM OUVIU

Alexandre Palacio (Mais Valia)

Daniel Fumega (BIKE, ex-Macaco Bong)

CIRCVLO RELEASES EP BY SINEWAVE
Beleza, the instrumental rock band’s second work, from Santos (São Paulo, Brazil), has a lot of personality and Latin influences

An ambient of celebration, inspiration and the connection between people. This is the main concept behind Beleza, the second EP of the band Circvlo, with the release date for 15 September 2017 by Sinewave, one of the major independent labels from Brazil.

“We prepared a video teaser to present this EP before the release and asked for some friends to tell about what inspires and connects them with other people”, tells the guitarist Kauê Moda.

For Odradek‘s drummer, Caio Gaeta, the work was a nice surprise. “It overcame my expectations! I found it a lot more mature, a mix of styles, something that comes out a bit of the predictable rock. It’s so much daring and timbres are great.” The band included Latin rhythms elements in the tracks, recorded by guest musicians.

On the teaser, Circvlo inserts a narration in Spanish, emphasizing the Latin aspects of the production. “The stretch says: ‘we are all one of a kind, but we are united. We need each other to share, to feel, to exist’. This is the base of Beleza“, complements Kauê.

The band presents two instrumental songs with post-rock hints, in a more tropical and relaxed way, a warmer side of the quartet from Santos city, way different from the debut EP Entrelapso (2016, independent). Listening to the works in sequence, it’s possible to see the sound variation between some dense / gloomy parts and other festive / soft parts, the way they play live.

For Túlio Albuquerque, Kalouv‘s guitarist, Beleza is out of the ordinary. “You can hear another side of the production with these songs, which now explore nicely percussive elements, adding this to a great work of guitars, bass and drums. The presence of the trumpet in one of the compositions is also a charm.”

The first song, “Eco”, transports you to the beach and imposes an intense rhythm by the timbale’s hits – beyond the drum, the percussion on the intro reinforce the Latin music references. Alternating quick contemplative parts with other heavy ones, the music follows a pulsating cadence with energetic riffs till the end.

“Tiki Taka” comes next, this time with an acoustic guitar, trumpet and flugelhorn to thicken the sauce of the EP. The song has striking breaks that bring a drama, marked even more by the wind instruments. The guitars and bass played with sudden heaviness and softness drive the song to its climax, when the beach ambience returns and it ends with a quick acoustic session, worthy of a luau party with fire pit by the seashore.

All the production and recording process was made with Fábio Gomes, who also recorded Circvlo’s first EP. “Since the first meetings to record Entrelapso, we felt way too comfortable to work with him. The guy looks over each detail of your music until reaches an incredible sound quality”, says the drummer Sérgio Júnior.

The artwork, embroidery made by Estúdio Hermanas, sends to the old game known as cat’s cradle. It’s possible to form the images with strings just after some coordinated hands movements between two or more people, another way found by the band to represent the idea of connection.

The name of the EP started from a joke with the drummer’s father who shouts “beleza!” (like “beauty” in English, an expression in Brazil like “cool” or “so nice”) for everything that he founds inspiring. The guitarist Thiago Gonçalves complements: “We understand this beauty like the small things of the day by day, the connection to the next, and the thing of sharing your experiences with other people. Not always we realize these moments but they make all the difference in our lives”.

WHO LISTENED TO

Alexandre Palacio (Mais Valia)
Melodic, emotive, intense and tropical. Nice band from Baixada Santista.

Daniel Fumega (BIKE, ex-Macaco Bong)
It’s a brutal and harmonious complexity, you know? Some timbres that fill the space… Like a sound mass with a classy output! The songs talk too much to each other. I’m very curious to see it live!

Caio Gaeta (Odradek)
It was a fucking good surprise this new EP. It overcame my expectations! I found it a lot more mature, a mix of styles, something that comes out a bit of the predictable rock. It’s so much daring and timbres are great.

Bruno Flores (SLVDR)
Fucking good! I really enjoyed it, reminds me of Piglet.

Túlio Albuquerque (Kalouv)
It still has heaviness but now has new colors, what sounds to me like a “tropical” math-rock, with post-rock hints already present in the first release. I like it very much when a band is “outside the box”, out of the comfort zone. And that’s what Circvlo did on this EP. Already counting the days to listen to a complete album of this group!
