No oitavo álbum completo do Kovtun, DEATH, Raphael Mandra continua o refinamento do ruído bruto e arranjos assustadoramente serenos em uma psicodelia verdadeiramente moderna, desde guitarras tribais de percussão e marcha da morte até amostras perturbadoras. Seus temas vão desde o extremismo emocional de muitos tipos até o embotamento. Muitas vezes a arte e a literatura (combinadas em pontos no conceito do álbum) e meditações sobre a morte. O antigo convidado Abelardo Marduk (Rádio Morto, Suínos) aparece novamente nas faixas com guitarras, além de adicioná-las em “The Life of the Bee”, composta por uma mistura inquietante de ruídos, guitarras, percussão e tudo o mais que possa ser imaginado. Outros convidados incluem William Wentz mais um parceiro musical de longa data e Lukas Marques, acrescentando um assombro percussional e belos arranjos de cordas como em “Everything Must Finish Exempt From Suffering”, que é sobre o livro controverso do escritor belga Maurice Maeterlinck. Acrescenta-se seu tipico desfigurado em “The Swarm”, criando uma peça impressionante que, em sua combinação de imagens infernais e arranjos cinematográficos abrangentes, mantém um terreno comum. Todos os convidados ajudam a contribuir para o efeito geral do álbum, mas esta é a visão do próprio Mandra acima de tudo, evitando clichês fáceis em todas as frentes para criar invocações enérgicas, nunca digeridas facilmente do poder musical.

On Kovtun‘s eighth full album DEATH, Raphael Mandra continue the refinement of brute noise and creepily serene arrangements into a truly modern psychedelia, from tribal drumming and death march guitars to disturbing samples and marching band samples and back. His subjects range from emotional extremism of many kinds to blunt, often art and literature imagery (matched at points in the album concept) and meditations on death. Past guest Abelardo Marduk (Rádio Morto, Suínos) appears again on the track with guitars, as well as adding them to “The Life of the Bee” which is composed of an unsettling mix of noise, guitars, percussion and whatever else can be imagined. Other guests include William Wentz then-musical partner Lukas Marques, adding a haunting, sometimes grating, string arrangement to “Everything Must Finish Exempt From Suffering” which is about the controvertial book by belgian writter Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck, adding his typically warped brass touches to “The Swarm” creating a stunning piece that in its combination of demonic imagery and sweeping, cinematic arrangements holds a common ground. All the guests help contribute to the album’s overall effect, but this is Mandra’s own vision above all else, eschewing easy cliches on all fronts to create unnerving, never easily digested invocations of musical power.
